Whenever I hear someone say that fighting for <some progressive issue> is a waste of time because it does not have a chance of becoming law until the Democratic Party gains control of Congress, I think of my home state. In California, we are so progressive that those on the right like to call us the land of the fruits and nuts. Let them call us names. CA is a really great place to live, all things considered.
Some people think of states as little laboratories where experiments can be held, then as a nation we can review the results and choose the best ideas to implement at the federal level. In CA, we are so progressive that the Democratic Party controls and dominates our fine state. So If you want to see an example of what might happen at the federal level if the Democratic Party completely controlled Congress, it might be worthwhile to consider what transpires in the Golden State.
2020 is right around the corner, so I’d like to share some information about my state’s primary system. It suppresses the votes of independent voters in a very sneaky way. I am confident that everyone here is in agreement that we want the elections of 2020 to be free and fair. I submit that at the very least, actions must be taken to ensure that the votes of independent voters in CA are not suppressed in the 2020 Democratic primaries. I think the solution is easy, and would most likely save the state money.
