Words of Wisdom to Cheer My Fellow Sanders Supporters

Serendipity is such a mischievous little imp … she shows her lovely face at the most unexpected moments, doesn’t she? This morning I was reading Daily Kos, as is my obsession, and happened to be reaching for a certain quote to use in a certain reply ... used the google to ensure that I had the correct wording, and voila, I stumbled upon a treasure trove. I share it with you now, my friends, and hope that it warms your soul as it did mine. Here are a number of quotes from Edmund Burke, found either at Brainy Quotes or at Wikiquote: “Nothing turns out to be so oppressive and unjust as a feeble government.” “Bad laws are the worst sort of tyranny.” “All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.” “Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little.”

The most obvious division of society is into rich and poor; and it is no less obvious, that the number of the former bear a great disproportion to those of the latter. The whole business of the poor is to administer to the idleness, folly, and luxury of the rich; and that of the rich, in return, is to find the best methods of confirming the slavery and increasing the burdens of the poor. In a state of nature, it is an invariable law, that a man's acquisitions are in proportion to his labours. In a state of artificial society, it is a law as constant and as invariable, that those who labour most enjoy the fewest things; and that those who labour not at all have the greatest number of enjoyments. A constitution of things this, strange and ridiculous beyond expression!

Mother Jones, 1905 article, Rich at Horse Show, Poor Children on Breadline.

“No passion so effectually robs the mind of all its powers of acting and reasoning as fear.”

“The concessions of the weak are the concessions of fear.”

“When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle.”

A very great part of the mischiefs that vex the world arises from words.

The government is, one day, arbitrary power in a single person; another, a juggling confederacy of a few to cheat the prince and enslave the people; and the third, a frantic and unmanageable democracy. The great instrument of all these changes, and what infuses a peculiar venom into all of them, is party. It is of no consequence what the principles of any party, or what their pretensions, are; the spirit which actuates all parties is the same; the spirit of ambition, of self-interest, of oppression, and treachery. This spirit entirely reverses all the principles which a benevolent nature has erected within us; all honesty, all equal justice, and even the ties of natural society, the natural affections. In a word, my Lord, we have all seen, and, if any outward considerations were worthy the lasting concern of a wise man, we have some of us felt, such oppression from party government as no other tyranny can parallel.

And in the words of Tiny Tim, because why the heck not?, “God bless us, every one.”

“And indeed Goldman [Sach]’s Tim O’Neill, who heads the bank’s asset management business, introduced Clinton by saying how courageous she was for speaking at the bank.” - Politico: Lament of the Plutocrats.

Gloria Steinem, Hillary Clinton, and Madeleine Albright think I don't know how to choose a political candidate. But I do! And I'm all about that Bern.”
